Description
V. riparia X V. labrusca. Large red grape with non-labrusca flavor. Primarily a wine grape, but ok fresh eating.St. Croix is an interspecific hybrid cross containing the genetics of Vitis labrusca and V. riparia. Its parents are E.S. 283 X E.S. 193, the same as the ‘Sabrevois’ grape. Another Elmer Swenson development, being bred at Osceola, Wisconsin.
Fruit – The grapes are large and red with a nice non- labrusca flavor (less ‘foxy’).
Vine – Moderate plant growth with medium to large clusters of fruit. Ripens in September in Walden, the week depending on weather conditions. Reported as cold hardy -40 F under good culture, although others have seen cold damage at lesser temperatures. We have had no problems thus far in Walden. Its sister vine, Sabrevois is supposedly hardier.
Wine – Makes a good, clean tasting wine. Harvest at 18 – 20 Brix and .80 – .90 acid.
Management – Moderate disease resistance. .Rootstocks Scionwood & Seed Custom Grafting Workshops & Events Care & Maintenance Consultations & Services Fresh Fruit
