Alkmene Apple

Description

Alkmene is a Red, crisp dessert and all purpose apple with juicy flesh. It is unique, pleasant with honey notes. Does not keep long, but does not drop prematurely. Ripens in mid to late September in zone 3. Originated in Germany as the progeny of Cox’s Orange Pippin x Geheimrat Dr. Oldenburg, at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute (Muncheberg) in the early 1900s. Introduced 1930. Sharper flavor than Cox. Also known as Early Windsor. Good scab resistance. Moderate hardiness (experimental beyond zone 4), but has survived in zone 3 (here in Walden) for 15 years.
