Hops
Humulus spp. Hops has been used historically in brewing as a flavoring, preservative and clarifying agent. Each variety adds its own characteristic taste and degree of bitters. Additionally hops may be taken as a tea for its mild sedating effects. A vigorous and attractive vine, hops can be used to fill in an arbor or living fence in short order. The plant grows a multitude of vines 20 feet or longer in a season, dying to the ground each winter, only to regrow again the next spring. The old twinings can be pruned away or left to accumulate to fill a space.
Easy to grow, unfussy about soil conditions, and hardy to zone 3.
Potted hops plants or dormant rhizome sections: $10 - $12
