Christmas Apple

Description

Red to red striped apple. This is a late ripening, long hanging cultivar. It is prized by supporters of wildlife as this tree will drop its fruit only very late in the season. The original tree (here in Walden Vermont) normally has fruit hanging well through Christmas. Originated at Walden Heights Orchard as a wild seedling. The real merit of this apple is in cider production and reductions due to its dry and easy pressing qualities. Good for most purposes, but not a juicy dessert apple. Tree is annual, strong and very cold hardy. Productive in cropping, with first picking in mid October in northern Vermont. Rare.
