Description

Patriot Blueberry is a (Dixi x Michigan LB-1) x Earliblue, cross. Tested as ME-US 32 (Vaccinium corymbosom). It is classified as a highbush, but is fairly low in stature, generally 4 to 5 feet. Developed by the USDA and Maine Agriculture Experimental Station Release cross made in 1954, selected in 1957 and introduced in 1976. It was named for the centennial which corresponded with its release date. This is likely the champion highbush in terms of cold hardiness. It is vigorous, cold hardy to zone 3, and tolerant of clay soils and phytophtora cinnamoni (a fungus causing root rot). Establishes easily. Ripens in a short season. At least 1000 chilling hours is recommended. (see Research section for more information on chilling hours. Fruit is slightly flat, and often very large (49 per cup early harvest and 70 per cup late harvest) and sweet, which hang in tight clusters. Yields are 10 - 15 pounds under proper management. The berry shows a 'pink back' if picked too early, so be patient, it will only add to sweetness to wait.

Custom Grafting
In addition to grafting the fruit trees we sell, we also offer custom grafting services. We can graft a hard to find cultivar, a reproduction from your own tree, or we can graft onto an existing tree on your property. New trees can be sent right away or grown a year here.
