Description
Amsib is a cold hardy jelly and cider crabapple. Fruits are 1 3/4 inch with a bright red skin and white firm flesh. Sweet, subacid and aromatic. Moderate astringency. Juicy fruit keeps well. Very productive. Cold hardy into zone 3. Like most crabs, this can be an ornamental tree as well, due to its prolific flower numbers. This is an american crab, but utilized a seedling parent from Russia. A cross between Iowa Wild Red (ioensis) and a baccata crab selection from Russia. Bred by NE Hansen at the South Dakota Ag Experimental Station, in the early 1900s. Released later (1932). Amsib is a combination moniker (am denotes american, and sib denotes siberian) to display the linking of North American and Russian lineages. Moderate brix levels (12-14), aromatics and astringency make this a good hard cider addition.
