Description

Almey is a cider and jelly crab bred for cold regions. The fruit is small, red to maroon, and normally oval in shape. Developed at the Dominion Experimental Station at Mordon, Manitoba and the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa (CA) in 1926. Released in 1946 in the US. This is a cross of Niedzwetzkyana x malus baccata. It is from Niedzwetzkyana that it derives its pink flesh and colorful blooms. Blossoms are bright red with white at the base. Very ornamental tree, and excellent pollenizer. Named after the horticulturist JR Almey. Very cold hardy, into zone 3 at least. High brix (20) and astringency make this a good choice for hard cider.
