Description
Large green to yellow apple. Tart at the early stage, it becomes mellower and sweet as yellow develops in the skin. Among the best as a pie apple. A Walden Heights introduction, selected from open pollinated antonovka. The tree is very cold hardy and strong. Good tree form and vigorous. Very productive in cropping. Fruit ripens in early September most years in northern Vermont, but can be picked earlier (at the green stage) for firmer pie-making. The name derives from the Ukranian word for pie. The antonovka line of apples originated in Kursk region in eastern Europe. This area has been claimed by both the Ukraine and Russia. The Ukraine formerly supplied the US and Europe with most of the antonovka seed historically. This line of varieties is said to be well over 500 years old.
