Lime is most often used in agriculture to counteract overly acidic soils. Plants have difficulty obtaining nutrients in when the pH is pushed too low, and so for most plant types, we want conditions to be close to neutral (a pH of 7). This is important for the uptake of many nutrients, especially phosphorus. Additonally, lime delivers nutrients directly, particularly calcium. Dolomitic lime also includes magnesium, another important plant nutrient.
