Hops

A vigorous and attractive vine, hops can be used to fill in an arbor or living fence in short order. The plant grows a multitude of vines 20 feet or longer in a season, dying to the ground each winter, only to regrow again the next spring. The old twinings can be pruned away or left to accumulate to fill a space.

Hops have been used historically in brewing as a flavoring, preservative and clarifying agent. Each variety adds its own characteristic taste and degree of bitters. Hops may also be used as a tea for its mild sedating effects.

Hops are easy to grow, unfussy about soil conditions, and hardy to zone 3.
